Medical humanities and the grotesque is an academic journal that mainly covers disability, disease, and medical trauma in different media. Our main goal is to bridge academic research with creative expression, because of this we plan to feature a mix of research essay, personal narratives, reviews, and even visual art.



We are looking for:

  • Lyrical essays

  • Short fiction or poetry

  • Visual art, photography, or illustration

  • Disfigurement and beauty

  • Illness as performance

  • The aesthetics of decay

  • Freak shows and fashion

  • Reclaiming the grotesque body

  • Body horror, both real and imagined
