As a national organization, the College English Association (CEA) was first established in 1938 to foster excellence in teaching and scholarship. Whether through its annual conference or its publications, the organization provides a meeting ground for those interested in all areas of English Studies, including literature, culture, creative writing, film and media studies, rhetoric, composition, technical communication, and pedagogy. Members from all walks of academic life are represented and welcomed.
Bridging traditional academic scholarship with practical pedagogy, The CEA Critic is the scholarly journal of the CEA. The journal publishes scholarly articles that center on close readings of the texts—fiction, poetry, drama, nonfiction, and film—that English professors study and teach. In this way, The CEA Critic celebrates the importance of literary criticism from a variety of approaches and the value of reading and teaching familiar and unfamiliar literary works. We are also interested in articles that consider pedagogy from a theoretical perspective or engage issues pertinent to all aspects of rhetoric and composition. Our goal is to provide a refreshingly sharp academic and practical perspective for teachers and scholars alike. We like to think we do a pretty good job: published by the Johns Hopkins University Press three times a year (in both print and electronic forms), the journal is indexed in the MLA International Bibliography.
The CEA Critic is interested in works concerning topics including but not limited to the following:

- Ethnic Studies
- Creative writing
- Popular culture
- Film studies
- Digital writing and multimedia composition
- Technical communication
- ESL (English as a Second Language)
Submission Guidelines
The CEA Critic has a long-standing tradition of publishing new and experienced scholars. To continue this tradition, we welcome submissions from graduate students and aim to publish one article by a graduate student in each issue. For publication, authors must be members of the College English Association. Non-members are welcome to submit but must join the CEA in order for accepted submissions to be published.
Please email submissions in Microsoft Word format to CRITICUNCO@gmail.com.
- Manuscripts should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words and must be accompanied by a 150-300 word abstract.
- Manuscripts should follow MLA style as it is set out in MLA Guide, 8th ed.
- All notes should be formatted as endnotes. Please insert endnotes manually and place before the Works Cited.
- Authors are responsible for both the accuracy of quotations and for representing source material fairly.
- Authors are responsible for securing any copyright releases involving graphs, tables, or illustrations.
